Liverpool Mercury (Dolan) hands over a cheque for more than £1,000 to Mari Curie Cancer CarePEDAL-power has helped raise more than £1,044 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in Liverpool.
Liverpool Mercury (Dolan) Cycling Club hosted their first-ever Kenny Hill Memorial Sportive on Sunday, September 20, which took in 70-miles of picturesque countryside across Lancashire.
But it was not all sightseeing, with around 60 riders taking on some of the toughest climbs in the region, including ascents up Appley Bridge, Belmont, Anglezarke, Hunters Hill, Bank Top Brow and Crow Lane, before descending Ashurst Beacon and finishing with a flat 15-mile run back to the finish at Knowsley Village Hall.
For those who wanted to enjoy the scenery but not take in too many tough hills, there was also the option to miss the last three climbs and rejoin the main route as the riders descend Ashurst Beacon.
Organisers Phil & Vicky Thomas laid on drinks and snacks at the top of Anglezarke for hungry and very thirsty riders, as well as a great spread of sandwiches, tea, coffee and every cake under the sun at the race HQ in Knowsley Village Hall.
Phil said: "Every year, we hold some sort of race to honour the memory of one of our club's greatest-ever riders - Ken Hill.
"But this was the first year that we ever held a sportive event open to the general public and it proved to be a great success.
"A lot of organising went into making sure the day was enjoyed by all. As a result, we decided that it would only be fitting to give all the proceeds from the event to the Liverpool branch of Marie Curie due to Ken's wife working there as a volunteer."
